The archaeological remains found in the Desierto de las Palmas mountains indicate that the area in which Castellón de la Plana is situated has always been inhabited; at least since the Neolithic times. However, no remains have been found in the actual city to prove that a settlement ever existed there before the city was founded. Numerous remains dating back to the Iberian period have been found, but only a few from the Roman era have been discovered.
